Food & Mental Health
Your body (including your brain of course) is like a machine. Your body needs fuel for working efficiently. Now it is important to watch what kind of fuel (foods) are you consuming because this impacts your brain and body chemistry.
Have you ever noticed that you are suddenly in a good mood and feel hyper after eating a sugar-loaded dessert? When you eat a plate full of carbs, ever noticed your energy fluctuating from high to low? That is your insulin spiking! Your body needed moderate amounts of insulin and because you consumed too many carbs and now your body is struggling to get back to its normal state.
Your Food and Mood
A major neurotransmitter called “serotonin” is produced in your gut and regulates your mood. According to scientific research, low Serotonin levels can cause symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other behavioral disorders.
Food and Inflammation
The food you consume plays a crucial role in your brain and gut health. Certain foods like gluten and sugar can cause inflammation in your brain and gut. Gluten causes inflammation in the brain. Inflammation has been linked scientifically to mental health disorders like autism spectrum disorders (ADHD), schizophrenia, hyperactivity, and mood disorders, including bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety and impairs overall cognitive functioning. An inflamed brain and immune system cause symptoms like brain fog, mental fatigue, and lack of concentration.
When I say "has been linked to" that does not mean gluten is the only reason for mental health difficulties. It means gluten might be the one piece of the puzzle. It is important to watch what you are eating. Mental and physical health go hand in hand.
Now, what to do?
-Avoid processed foods and refined sugar.
-Eat nutritious-rich foods.
-Keep on the lookout for foods that can cause inflammation in your body.
Remember nutritious food is just like medicine it improves your mood & health and makes your immune system stronger.
I know eating clean and nutritious food is difficult but effort is the first step!
